Yes, it’s time to transform all your ANXIETY into BLISS! And this isn’t just another ridiculous new-age claim… honest! Because you’re gonna have to work for it, at least a bit.
This position is currently my fave Bioenergetic position. I do it for 20 to 30 minutes each morning and it transforms all the negative shit floating around my being into pure Bliss!
It’s a modified version of the classic Arch position, made famous by Alexander Lowen and also I heard very popular with the Inuit Indians, helps keep them warm and flexible.
It’s quite advanced so please don’t diss yourself if you can’t quite manage it yet. Just keep practicing with the Bow & Arch each morning and it will come.
And it goes like this…
Stand with your legs about shoulder-width apart and with the outsides of the feet roughly parallel.
Breathe through your mouth, in and out, and keep your eyes open throughout the exercise
Lean forwards slowly and let your upper body hang down, see accompanying video. Your fingers should be about 8 inches, 20 cm, from the floor.
Jiggle your head and arms a little to ensure that they are just hanging, not being held.
Keep your legs nearly, but not quite straight, and your weight towards the front of your feet
Breathe deeply, staying really present and feeling your body until a slight shaking begins. If no shaking seems to happen naturally then try to “kick-start” it by making yourself shake a little up and down. This shaking is the body’s natural release response and is sometimes accompanied by fear. When you feel it happening naturally, like you’re not forcing it, allow it to keep going.
Whether you get the natural shaking or not, after a few minutes of this hanging down, start to lean forwards and rest your knuckles on the floor in front of you. It’s best not to put your palms down on the floor as this locks the wrists. So just rest on your first or second set of knuckles.
Straighten your legs and lift your heels very slightly off the floor. If your body shakes naturally in this position then great, continue. If not you can again give it a little encouragement.
After a few minutes bring your hands off the floor and return to the classic Arch position.
You can do this exercise for 20-30 mins each morning if you like. Once you get used to the shaking it will start to become blissful. If you get severe or sharp pain at any time then stop of course. But if you have no pre-existing back or leg injury it should be do-able for most people.
20-30 mins of this each morning will leave you ready to do a whole heap of stuff with your day and still enjoy!
